How on earth are we already at half term??! It’s very lovely indeed to be seeing regulars, new faces, and those of you who are joining us after a wee break - we hope that you’re all enjoying this term’s adventures as much as we are!
As we brace ourselves for yet another onslaught of inclement weather, we have been warmed by turning our thoughts to what we shall be doing as the days grow longer. We hope that what we’ve cooked up will offer you some warming cheer too!
So without further ado… <cue: Drum roll>…
First up… Hwæt!
This is, as many of you will know, the first word of Beowulf - translated, variously over the years, as “What ho"!”, “Listen!”, “So…”, and even “Yo!” All of the above apply here, because yes - it’s now time for what many of you have requested for a while…
Our second 10-week course has also been much requested, and will allow us to bask in a long chronological range (we know a lot of you like that!), as we metaphorically frolic in the warmth of leisurely Mediterranean lunches…

Next up, a 7-weeker, with which Robert has been tinkering for some time, in order to get it just right, and which we hope will appeal to several of you (not least those who’ve explicitly asked for it!)…

And so to our first tranche of Short & Sweets, which will take us into half term…

Next up (and also frequently requested)… what better way to spend a couple of May Saturday mornings than exploring a multi-faceted tale of trade, national rivalries, and colonialism, in the Company of “The Honourable John”?
Our last Short & Sweet for now has not, as far as I recall, been specifically requested, but it’s one which Robert has long wanted to do, which we think will especially appeal to those of you with a particular penchant for the Classical period (of course we weren’t going to forget you…!), so voila:
Nuff said on that one, I suspect!!
We’re cooking up a few more things (sneak preview: two Short & Sweets for June/July, something up at Pickering, and a new literary venture). Finally, a brief explanatory note to those of you who aren’t with us this term… The photo at the top of this page is proof that Robert and I have finally had a trip together for the first time since before Lockdown (aside from those concerning my late father’s illness and funeral). No really! We ventured across the Pennines for an overnight stay to see a popular beat combo. Robert was trepidatious, to say the least, and, as several Denizens remarked, there was a good chance that he’d insist on wearing his deerstalker… but no! Not only did he not need that in the end, he was even willing to venture into the world without a bow tie! Photographic evidence provided as requested. And yes… we’re not good at taking selfies in complete darkness, but hey - going on “a date” AND mastering a new technical skill would be too much for us these days…
