In the fifteenth century there was a revolution in painting north of the Alps, which was every bit as dazzling as the one in Italy. Beginning in the wealthy towns of Flanders, and encouraged by the powerful Dukes of Burgundy, a new level of emotion and realism was achieved. During the sixteenth century new artistic styles also developed in the Netherlands and Germany.

We will meet the early Flemish masters, such as Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden, before moving to the Netherlands to explore the work of Pieter Breughel the elder and Hieronymus Bosch.
